Are you living out of the longing of your soul?
I’ve always been drawn to Oprah’s idea of living your best life. But even more to simply trying to make the most of my life.
Aren’t you?
That’s why I coach.
I started to think about this because someone from my newsletter list asked what propelled me to move from psychotherapy to coaching.
I know I have written before about how the cover of an East West Journal had a picture of Cheryl Richardson on it with the heading Life Coach. And that when I read it, I had a proverbial light bulb moment that shot a powerful surge of energy through my entire body with a clear message. “This is my path. This is who I am. These are my people.”
The Promise of Psychotherapy and Life Coaching
But the truth is, both therapy and coaching have the same promise. They both try to help people make the most of their lives.
They just do it differently.
Psychotherapy looks to heal emotional wounds.
Life coaching looks to fulfill one’s potential. And by the way, that might include healing emotional wounds.
Let’s look at sports for a second to explain this.
If you injure your shoulder throwing a ball, you need to go to a trained medical professional to fix it.
But when you are trying to throw that same ball farther and farther, you go to a coach.
And that’s what I do. I help you throw the ball further except it’s your life you’re trying to throw further or should I say, get the most out of.
How Life Coaching Helps You Make the Most of Your Life
And how do coaches help their clients or athletes or performers do that?
It’s pretty much the same system.
First, you have to assess what’s going on in the present. You can do an audit, you can do a Wheel of Life, you can answer some questions. That’s what a Life Coach does. Other coaches do the same. How far can you throw that ball? How are your “mechanics”?
Second, you look at what it looks like to get the most out of yourself or out of life. As a Life Coach, we dream together. What is the calling? What is that vision you hold close but don’t share with others? An athlete will have a dream too. “I want to play for the NFL.” Simple.
Third, you make a plan. Oh yes you do. There needs to be something to ground you, even though that plan may change a hundred times.
Even Michael Singer, in The Surrender Experiment, had a plan. He wanted to stay in the woods and devote his life to Yoga and Meditation. Now if you haven’t read this book, oh please do. It’s a page turning.
And his plan was to surrender to whatever this magnificent universe brought to him.
An unusual plan for sure, but it was a plan in any case. And he is having an amazing ride. He has certainly been making the most of his life.
