My Mission is to Alleviate Suffering!
Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars. – Kahilil Gibran
When I reflect on why I am so addicted, attracted and consumed by personal growth and development, I see one powerful truth. I am driven to alleviate suffering, mine and yours.
It’s not because I am such a good person.
Rather, it’s because I grew up in a home that had a lot of pain.
Yes, there was joy too.
But man, there was pain.
At least from my perspective as a child.
We attended family therapy when no one on earth actually did that. No one I knew of anyway. We had to drive to a bigger city to find the therapist.
The pain I saw from my parents in particular scared me and scarred me. Their pain became my pain.I felt it as my own. Was it simply my capacity for compassion?
I think it was more than that. I think I am an empath. Well, I know I am one now. Likely, I was born that way.
But as a child, I didn’t know how to allow all that pain to flow through me. It got caught. And all I wanted to do was to alleviate their suffering.
I suspect as a kid, their happiness meant I would be okay.
And so, after many other careers and callings, I find myself in a position where I can actually alleviate suffering.
My own, through the reflective personal growth work I continue to do. And others, through the psychotherapy and coaching courses and degrees I’ve accumulated.
Funny huh, how a whole life and career can be influenced so strongly by a childhood experience?
And although my initial motivation was deeply personal, it has taken on a life of its own. I love that my work helps others to suffer less and enjoy their lives more. I love that I help people get past their self-imposed limitations to grow and express themselves more fully.
I just plain love it.
