How Tapping (EFT) Helped Me With My Emotional Self-Care!

Woman using Emotional Freedom Technique by tapping on the side of her hand

Almost 20 years ago now, I went through a painful divorce. Well really, what divorce isn’t painful?

My heart was broken. Unfortunately, none of my usual self-care techniques helped. I had many moments when I would sink down in my bedroom chair and sob. I had moments when I would pick up the phone and leave very angry messages. I had moments when I was mostly numb.

And then, I tapped. 👯‍♀️

What? Like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers? Like on America’s Got Talent?

No, I practiced something called Emotional Freedom Technique otherwise known as Tapping.

And the pain went away for good.

What do to when your usual self-care techniques aren’t enough!

Tapping (EFT) is a radical departure from conventional therapeutic techniques.

During my studies as a psychotherapist, I learned a lot about talk therapy. There were many theories, but they were all about talking to a counselor who would listen and ask questions exploring what in your life might be causing such suffering.

Most had strategies to help the client work through the difficulties. Sometimes they worked. Sometimes they didn’t.

And to be fair, having a caring person who can really empathize with you and problem solve the issue is very helpful in many ways.

But often, the emotional pain is still stuck in the client’s body and they can feel it.

The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system. – Gary Craig

What makes EFT different?

EFT is based on the discovery that imbalances in the body’s energy system have profound effects on one’s personal psychology.

Gary Craig www.emofree.com, the man who popularized EFT states it very simply:

And by correcting these imbalances, and getting the energy unstuck and moving, which is done by tapping on certain body locations (acupressure meridian points), many emotional problems vanish. I mean evaporate. Really. And sometimes in minutes.

That’s how it worked for me.

I had studied tapping, even got an advanced certification. But like many things that you know are good for you, I rarely used it.

One weekend, I was in upstate New York studying the Law of Attraction when the teacher, Michael Losier https://www.michaellosier.com/, commented that if “he had not become the Law of Attraction guy, he would have become the tapping guy.”

I was intrigued. So was everyone else. And so he showed us a technique that combined the Law of Attraction with Tapping.

I was sold.

Tapping restored my well-being

I went back to my cabin and decided to try it on my deep emotional pain over my marriage break up.

Here’s what I did.

Across the top of a page I wrote: I am in the process of healing myself emotionally and moving on with my life.

On the left side of the page I wrote: Contrast – What I don’t want or like.

On the right side I wrote Clarity – What I do want and like.

Then I wrote out all the things I didn’t want or like under the left side list.

This included things like feeling so angry, feeling depressed, being uncomfortable around my ex. (We shared a dog.) And much more. I must have had at least 15-20 things listed there. And some were deep and personal.

Then, I took each entry and shifted it to what I do want and wrote that in the right side column. For example, feeling so angry shifted to I feel peaceful. Feeling depressed changed to feeling light-hearted and happy. Being uncomfortable around him became feeling neutral around him.

And then I tapped.

As I went around and tapped on the specific EFT spots, I repeated the “what I don’t want list.” I probably tapped on that for 10 – 15 minutes. Then, I shifted and began tapping on the  “What I want list.”

After about 30 minutes total, I had a remarkable experience.

I felt my pain literally lift out of my body and evaporate in space.

Okay, maybe it didn’t evaporate, but that’s how it felt. Like a ton of bricks was taken off my heart.

It was remarkable.

Later that month when I met my ex husband to pick up the dog, I looked right at him and said with complete conviction that I had forgiven him. He started to cry. And I was able to hold him and comfort him and feel pretty neutral about the whole thing.

Isn’t that just amazing? I mean WOW.

In these last years, the idea of energy healing has come to the forefront of wellness.

We’ve all begun to understand how vital energy flows through our body. We’ve learned about meridians. Yoga calls this vital energy prana. Chinese Medicine calls it Chi. And there are many practices for strengthening it, or releasing it, or balancing it that come to us from many cultures.

Tapping is now a staple in my self-care pantry
