✨ Plan to do ✨
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
– Mary Oliver, poet
I guess I am not one to give my life over to chance.
I definitely plan from the small things to the big projects.
And my life, it seems to me, is the biggest project of all.
Setting goals is certainly part of the planning process. And yes, we set them to give us a target, a ballpark location of where we want to end up in certain areas of our lives.
But mostly, we set goals because it’s part of how we take our one wild and precious life seriously.
Planning helps us to reduce the likelihood of regrets. And it allows us to be more intentional.
Intentional is such a powerful word and concept. It’s basically asking you not to go through life unconscious and asleep.
When I was younger, I would walk past the windows of a crowded bar and watch the people laughing, probably drunk and what seemed to me blissfully unconscious. They seemed to have a reckless, carefree way about them. And I longed for that too.
I am just not like that.
I am very engaged in creating a life of awareness. I want to grow. Everyday, I do things that help me grow.
And part of that is planning. Setting goals, making sure they are meaningful and matter, and putting them into my Bullet Journal.
For me, a life well lived is a life well planned.
How about you? What kinds of things do you have planned for your one wild and precious life?
✨5 Steps for Setting Goals with Soul in 2022✨
Step One: Understand that Success Requires Personal Development
Step Two: Get Clear On Why You Are Setting Goals
Step Three: Connect Your Goals With Your Values
Step Four: Make Sure Your Goal is For You and Not For Someone Else.
Step Five: Set One Primary Goal at a Time.
✨Do You Meditate? ✨
Meditation saved my life.
Dramatic, I know.
And technically, that’s not true.
But in 1977, when I first stepped gingerly into the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF)meeting centre in NYC, I was, how do I put this, all over the place?
I loved living in NYC. I loved performing in clubs. But I was very undisciplined, very romantically challenged, and enjoyed too much of the drug culture. I was being manipulated by a few unsavoury music business types, and kind of letting it happen. I was, as I looked back, on a slippery slope to self-destruction.
Paramahansa Yogananda, the founder and guru of SRF magically appeared in front of me on the cover of a book at a bookstore that I was wandering around in.
I took one look at his eyes, and bought Autobiography of a Yogi immediately.
I knew about meditation of course. The Beatles made sure of that.
But I had not purposely committed to it.
All these years later, here is how my commitment to it has helped me.
✔️My panic and anxiety are manageable without drugs. I’ve struggled with that since I was a child.
✔️I can sit for long periods of concentration.
✔️I can manage my emotions no matter how upsetting things might seem.
✔️I can sit back and witness life so I don’t get drawn in by the drama of it all. Believe me, that’s a relief given all the drama.
✔️I have a deep and abiding appreciation for the Invisible Creative Principle of the Universe. And sometimes, I even feel it’s presence.
✔️I can be totally present for my clients. I find coaching is a form of meditation where I get really still and quiet within so I can pick up all the vibrational information that is flowing to me from my client and through me from that Creative Principle I mentioned before. I have a lot of respect for the process. And insights seem to appear as if by magic. Oftentimes life-changing for my clients.
✔️It makes me feel like I am doing something worthwhile with my one wild and precious life.
✔️The stillness I feel within is the best feeling in the world, next to loving my sweet husband.
Do you meditate? How have you benefited from it?

✨How Listing Your Wins is the Best First Step When Setting Goals for 2022✨
Did you know humans have a negativity bias? Oh yes we do.
We can catch the negative or dangerous vibe so much faster than we can the positive.
And the negative is so much stronger and longer lasting.
Yup. That’s being human.
I often tell people, it’s the difference between rolling down a grassy hill and trying to climb back up.
Focusing on the negative is the easy one, like rolling down the hill.
Getting connected to the positive, well, you get it, it’s the climbing back up.
Recognizing our achievements takes effort and intention.
Once you start, you will see your accomplishments everywhere.
That’s why I always start my goal setting sessions with a list of WINS from the previous week, month or year.
My 5 Big Wins from 2021❤️
- I survived. With so much heartbreaking loss this year, I must stop and be very grateful I survived.
- I launched my Confident Entrepreneur program and attracted a beautiful and perfect group to go through it.
- I showed up on Social media… you have no idea how hard that has been.
- My love for my husband grows everyday. I could cry with joy.
- I did my 3 weekly workouts even when I had to do them on the living room floor! Wow. What an accomplishment
Well, that was me… what about you? I feel my whole spirit lifting as I write my wins down.

✨Winners and losers have the same goal. – James Clear (Atomic Habits)✨
As author James Clear points out in his great book Atomic Habits, one problem with standard goal setting is that winners and losers have the same goals.
It’s pretty obvious in sports. Both teams have the goal to win the World Series. Or each runner has the goal to win gold.
What then, what makes the difference?
James Clear thinks goals are great for planning your progress, but it’s systems that are great for actually making progress.
And this is why many people get frustrated and feel disappointed by their goals. They don’t achieve them right? But they missed a really important part of goal setting: what are you going to put into place to help you make progress toward achieving your goal?
Let’s face it, achieving a goal is really not in our control.
I have set a goal to double my email subscribers by the end of the year. Honestly, I have no control over whether or not that will happen.
I do have control over the system I put into place to help me make progress towards that goal.
I emailed my warm market asking if they’d like to join my list.
I schedule time to write my newsletter every Wednesday.
I have a template on Convert Kit to make uploading easier
I have an “opt-in” box all over my website.
I have a link in my Instagram BIO
….hmm that’s a good point. I should put something on Facebook too!!!
You get the idea.
Here’s another example:
Goal: to stay fit and vibrant and full of life forever!
Systems: Attend 3 CrossFit classes weekly.
Push myself to lift a little heavier weights.
Write down my weights into the app to keep track.
Prepare my clothes, water bottle etc. the night before.
Write it into my scheduler.
My systems aren’t exactly fancy like Toyota’s Production System…but they don’t need to be.
I can tell you though, they are the reasons I even get close to achieving my goals, and they propel me long after the goal has been achieved. These systems help me to take on new goals because the systems turn into habits.
If you want to learn how to do this, Register for my FREE Setting Goals with Soul Workshop, Saturday, November 20, 2021 10am-12pm EST.

I’m preparing for my Setting Goals with Soul 2022 workshop and having the best time reading and listening to other coaches and teachers.
Everyone, it seems, has some wonderful twist to the whole process. And I’m getting some great ideas.
Personally, I’ve been a goal setting ever since I took my Life Coach Training back in 1997. Until then, I had vague dreams and plans, but I didn’t understand the power of pen to paper when it came to setting goals.
Goals provide us with a great target, a destination, an experience we long for. And when thought about deeply and written down in a way we can interact with, they send information to our subconscious brain so that it can help us accomplish those goals.
Without intentional goals, we don’t just float around, we fall back. The laws of the universe keeps everything in motion so if we aren’t moving forward, we are falling back. Or…we are spinning in one place in space simply going nowhere fast.
Even when we choose to surrender our life to the powers that be, well, that is a goal isn’t it!!!!😄
