3 Reasons Why You Should Go After Your Dreams Even in a Pandemic
How are you?
How are you?
So often, we are flippant and automatic when we answer that greeting. But as a life coach, I am sincerely interested in your answer.
And so, let me ask it again.
How are you?
We are living in a very strange time. Life is changing for many of us in ways we couldn’t have imagined and have no control over. I know it has for me.
My clients are having a difficult time staying focused on their goals and dreams. Understandably. Not only are the changes distracting, they can be downright depressing.
Low moods, lack of motivation and clinical depression are often about feeling as if we have no control over our lives. We feel helpless. And helplessness feels terrible.
If you are feeling either guilty, helpless or unmotivated about your goals, plans and dreams, I want to talk to you about why you should go after your dreams, even in a pandemic!
3 Reasons Why You Should Go After Your Dreams, Even in a Pandemic.
Reason 1 – Don’t Waste a Crisis
Many years ago, I read some books by Bernie Siegal M.D. He was one of the very first doctors to recognize the importance of our thoughts, and attitudes when it came to healing our bodies. He was famous for teaching us that a disease that doesn’t change us, is a wasted disease.
I see this pandemic in a similar way. Yes, it is certainly a crisis for many people in many ways, from loss of a loved one to loss of a job, to loss of a way of life.
Still, what can we learn from this crisis that could change us for the better?
For example, what if we allowed this crisis to guide us deeper into ourselves, and into the longing of our souls? We could discover that the life we are living or the job we were doing doesn’t fulfill us, in a deep way.
We can also discover that the goals and dreams we may have kept hidden need to be taken off the shelf and dusted off.
If this crisis can teach us anything, it’s that life is short and unpredictable. There is no time like the present to make it a life you feel is worth living.
And although this may seem like a huge turn around for you, it doesn’t have to be. Look for the small ways you can create change for yourself. Maybe it’s the daily walk you’ve been planning on doing but just never get around to.
Maybe it’s better choices re: food, nicer attitude towards your loved ones, even the development of a new habit of gratitude.
Whether you have a big dream or a small habit change, take this unsettling time and make it happen. Don’t waste this crisis.
Reason 2 – You Can Create More Meaning and Fulfillment in Your Dreams
We could look at this crisis and have it help us to uncover more meaning for our lives and our dreams.
When there is so much of what we take for granted being challenged around us, and so much social upheaval, this is a time to look at what really matters to us, and to others.
In Lara Casey’s PowerSheets planner, she asks this powerful question:
What will really matter to you when you are 70, 80, 90 or 100?
Today is a great time to ponder this question.
Look at your goals, your dreams, the things you are striving to have or create or contribute. Do they really matter?
Reflect on your life many years ahead. Will your choices and actions today lead you to feeling at peace with where you are tomorrow?
The answers to this reflective question are deep. You want to look into your heart and soul. And change up your dream if you need to. If your life is on pause because of the pandemic, you can take this time to be deeply reflective.
If your life has sped up, make a date with yourself to turn off the world, slow down and just think.
Either way, this is a great time to connect all your dreams, goals and ambitions to the things that matter most to you. That alone will help to fuel you to take action.
There is nothing like a purpose-driven life to get you moving in the morning.
Reason 3 – The World Needs Your Light
More than anything, the most important reason you should still go after your dreams even in a pandemic is because the world needs your light.
If your dreams are connected to your soul, and have meaning for you, then you will be contributing such positive, focused and beautiful energy into the world, that you’ll be helping the healing.
Think about the opposite. You’re miserable. What kind of help is that?
Energy is contagious.
Think about a time you walked into a room, maybe a party, a board meeting, or on the bus and all you could feel were bad “vibes.”
Maybe someone was cranky or angry or just plain negative. Yuk. Didn’t you feel it? That energy is not helpful. It’s not uplifting. And it certainly isn’t fun!
What kind of energy do you want to be contributing to the world?
You can be a beacon of light, love and joy when you continue to go after your most meaningful dreams and goals.
The world needs your enthusiasm and hope.
In summary, these are the 3 Reasons You Should Go After Your Dreams, Even in a Pandemic.
You don’t want to waste this crisis and have it do nothing for you. You want to have this difficult time help you to figure out what matters most to you. And you want to share your light with the world.
All these reasons are what we call “reframes” in coaching. There are just so many ways to look at any situation that learning the skill of reframing will contribute tremendously to your personal growth.
No matter what is going on, there are always ways to see things as supportive, uplifting and helpful to ourselves and others.
Your dreams matter. You matter. Don’t give up on yourself or your dreams. You’ll be depriving the world of those things that only you can contribute.
The world needs you to show up right now. And to show up big!
